How do early environmental factors influence a child’s health and mental development?
What we study
We investigate how the (early) environment influences the development of behavior, wellbeing and health of young children. Our studies are often longitudinal in nature. In this way we try to understand how caregiving decisions of parents, for example, in the realm of sleeping arrangements, (breast)feeding, and non-parental caregiving, are related to how the child develops. Furthermore, we study the transition to parenthood from hormonal, emotional and behavioral points of view. Many of our studies begin during pregnancy and focus on trying to find links between the psychology and biology of individuals, for example, by studying specific hormones in relation to behavior and emotions.
